Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA)

"Come and see!" -Jesus, John 1:39

What is OCIA?

The Order of Christian Initiation  for Adults is the general process for those who are  to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Order means, 'to incorporate into,' such as Holy Orders or the Order of Matrimony.

If you have ever asked: "How do I become Catholic?" "I did not get Confirmed, how can I get Confirmed now?" or "How do I find out more about the Catholic Church?" Then OCIA is for you. Please contact Father and let him know of your interest.

Who needs the OCIA sessions?

Active Catholic youth do not need OCIA, as they will journey through the CCD programs for First Communion, Confirmation, and Faith Formation. Adults who want to join the Catholic Church, get Confirmed, or need Baptized should journey through OCIA.

When are the OCIA sessions?

Sessions are typically held on Sunday afternoons in the Scholasticum's Ven. Fulton Sheen Conference Room. Sessions begin in the fall and are completed prior to Easter. The next series of OCIA sessions will begin in August. The exact time of meeting is determined by the participants each year.

Those in OCIA need to attend sessions in their home Parishes (where they are attending Mass every weekend).

Do I need to purchase materials?

No. All materials needed will be gifted to you, regardless of your discernment into the Church. Currently OCIA sessions rely on the RSV Catholic Bible, Catechism, and supplemental material provided.

What do OCIA sessions consist of?

Typical OCIA sessions will last from 1 hour to 1.5 hours.  Father will introduce a topic and present the Church's teaching. A time for questions is always present. Prior to the session being presented, those going through OCIA may be asked to do some light reading from one of the texts mentioned above.

What if I am just searching?

Welcome! Whether you are prepared to follow Jesus into His Church, or just need some more information to take into prayer, OCIA can help you. It is good to note, however, that OCIA presents facts, theology, and philosophy. OCAI cannot force an encounter with God. This will come through your personal prayer. If you need some help with prayer, do not be afraid to ask for help!

Is there a place I can find the Church's teaching on my own?

Of course. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (Liberia Editrice Vatican) contains the dogmatic teachings of Christ in His Church. Any Catholic edition of the Sacred Scriptures (Bible) will contain all of God's promulgated Word.
